If you choose the wrong self balancing scooter, it may not be suitable for you or worse, your scooter could break down or break in half as has happened already and this hoverboard is not cheap either.
Have a look at our comparison table and our recommended hoverboards.
A hoverboard is one of the COOLEST gadgets available these days and riding one is an adventure by itself.
If you are looking to buy someone a birthday or Christmas gift, then you can’t go wrong with buying someone a hoverboard.
A hoverboard you say? But don’t hoverboards float in the air?
Of course they do. Real hoverboards that float in the air do exist, but they generally use levitation and magnetic forces that require a steel track to be able to float without touching the earth.
A true hoverboard will probably make use of an anti-gravity device, but at this stage we are talking about something that belongs in the realm of science fiction… or maybe it already exists… who knows?
Generally, these days when someone talks about a hoverboard; we all know what they are taking about, although in the truest sense of the word; it is called a self balancing scooter.
Worried About Hoverboard Safety?
When hoverboards first became popular, there were a few of them that actually burned out when the batteries exploded.
This led authorities to start banning these self balancing scooters, unless they obtained a safety certificate.
Therefore, any hoverboard sold these days have been tested for safety and awarded and certified with what they call a UL 2272 certificate.
Manufacturers make it quite clear that they are certified (therefore their hoverboards are safe) and if a brand is not UL 2272 certified, you may be risking injury.
There is an inherent risk in riding a hoverboard and if Mike Tyson can fall while riding one, you can too; so therefore it is strongly recommended that you also buy some protective safety equipment such as kneepads, elbow pads and wrist guards.
A bicycle helmet or a skateboard helmet is also recommended.
Best Self Balancing Scooter / Hoverboard Reviews
Updated Nov. 2024When reviewing the best hoverboards, we spent quite a bit of time compiling these reviews and looked at all the various factors that we would personally have chosen if we had to buy all of them.
For these reviews, apart from the best value for money and customer service, we considered three main factors:
- The speed of the hoverboard.
- The battery life of the self balancing scooter.
- The maximum weight that a hoverboard could handle.
Some hoverboard brands made it extremely difficult to find certain information and one brand even side stepped a direct question about battery life.
They stated that the distance that the hoverboard can go is more important than battery life.
Yes, we understand that other factors such as body weight and the angle of the road or terrain are factors to consider, but we need some sort of idea of how long the battery will last before we have to start walking.
This is also a brand that got extremely good reviews but upon closer inspection, customers complained about bad customer service and boards breaking in half. Ouch!
For the amount of money they are asking, it is certainly not worth the risk and although we initially reviewed their self balancing scooter, we decided to remove it from our list.
That being said, all the battery lives given on this page is an approximate value.
Please find below our choices of what we consider the best self balancing scooters for Nov. 2024.
